Search.classifiedlist.net Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is search.classifiedlist.net?
Developed by SaferBrowser, Classified List is a deceptive application that supposedly helps users to find special deals and discounts available on various e-shops.
On initial inspection, Classified List may appear legitimate and useful, however, this application stealthily modifies Internet browser settings, delivers intrusive online advertisements, and track users' Internet browsing activity. Furthermore, it usually infiltrates systems without permission.
For these reasons, Classified List is categorized as a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Following successful infiltration, Classified List hijacks Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, assigning the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine options to search.classifiedlist.net. The main issue here is the inability for users to revert these changes - Classified List reassigns the settings when attempts are made to change them.
Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible and users encounter unwanted browser redirects to search.classifiedlist.net when they attempt to search the Internet via the URL bar or by opening a new browsing tab. In addition, Classified List generates intrusive online advertisements that often conceal underlying content of visited websites.
Some lead to malicious websites containing infectious content. Clicking them can result in further computer infections. By generating content-concealing advertisements and causing unwanted browser redirects, Classified List significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience.
Another downside of this rogue application is data tracking - this hijacker records IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar browsing-related information.
This data might contain private details that SaferBrowser shares with cooperating third party companies who misuse private details to generate revenue. In doing so, third parties can cause serious privacy issues. You should eliminate the Classified List browser hijacker immediately.
Developers of Classified List have released a number of identical applications. Examples include Email Faster, Your Video Converter, My News Wire, My Recipes XP, and Easy Movies Access.
SaferBrowser aims to generate as much revenue as possible, and so this company intentionally releases identical applications under different names (attempts to prevent detection by legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suites). Classified List, and these other apps, are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
These applications give no real value for regular users. Rather than providing the functions promised, Classified List and other SaferBrowser products cause unwanted redirects, deliver intrusive, ads and collect personal data.
How did search.classifiedlist.net install on my computer?
Classified List has an official download website, however, developers also distribute this rogue application using a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular applications/software).
Research shows that users often skip most/all of the download and installation steps. Aware of this, developers hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of PUPs such as Classified List can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, potentially unwanted programs are usually distributed using the bundling method.
Therefore, select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step of the download/installation processes. Secondly, decline all offers to download/install additional applications and opt-out of those already included.
