DiskPower Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DiskPower?
DiskPower is a rogue application that supposedly allows optimization of hard disk partitions. On initial inspection, DiskPower may seem legitimate and useful, however, this app often infiltrates systems without users' consent. Furthermore, it records various user/system information and displays various intrusive ads. For these reasons, DiskPower is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Following infiltration, DiskPower gathers various information such as hardware details, system activity, geo-locations, etc. This data is supposedly recorded to display relevant advertisements, however, it might contain private details that are misused to generate revenue.
Therefore, data tracking can lead to serious privacy issues. Furthermore, DiskPower delivers various intrusive advertisements. This behavior is common to adware-type applications. Be aware that these displayed ads often conceal underlying content of visited websites, thereby diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, some redirect to malicious websites containing infectious content - clicking them is risky and might cause further high-risk adware or malware infections. DiskPower is a potential threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety. You are strongly advised to remove this PUP immediately.
The Internet is full of potentially unwanted programs similar to DiskPower including HotStar Registry Cleaner, FixIt, and Win Tune Pro - these are just some examples from a long list. All PUPs offer a number of 'useful functions' to trick users to install, however, most of these applications are useless for regular users.
Their real purpose is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than enabling the features promised, PUPs display intrusive advertisements, gather personal data, and cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did DiskPower install on my computer?
DiskPower is distributed via an official download website, and using a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software). Developers know that most users skip most/all of the download and installation processes.
Therefore, bundled PUPs such as DiskPower are intentionally concealed within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings of the download/installation processes. Skipping this section can lead to inadvertent installation of bogus programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Be aware that potentially unwanted programs are often distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step. Furthermore, decline all offers to download/install additional applications and cancel those already included. The key to computer safety is caution.
