Light Manager Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Light Manager?
Light Manager is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to allow users to adjust their computer screen lights - "Light Manager - Personalize your screen light with several modes and manual configuration".
These claims often trick users into believing that Light Manager is a legitimate application, however, due to rogue behavior, Light Manager is classed as adware. This PUP infiltrates systems without users’ permission, generates intrusive online advertisements, and monitors web browsing activity.
Following infiltration, Light Manager generates pop-up, coupon, and other similar advertisements using a 'virtual layer' - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. None of these displayed advertisements originate from users' visited websites and, thus, conceal underlying content and significantly diminish the web browsing experience.
Furthermore, they often lead to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and can lead to further computer infections. Another downside is information tracking. Light Manager records IP addresses, operating system and browser types, Internet service provider (ISP), website URLs visited, pages viewed, and other similar data.
This information may seem insignificant, however, it will contain private details that developers of Light Manager share with third parties.
Private information can be misused to generate revenue and, thus, the presence of a data-tracking app on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall Light Manager adware immediately.
This PUP has similar characteristics to Kozzoo, BandwidthStat, Hide My AdBlocker, and hundreds of other adware-type apps. These also falsely claim to enhance the web browsing experience by providing a number of 'valuable functions', however, these fake promises by adware-type applications are simply attempts to give the impression of legitimate software.
Research shows that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. These apps merely generate intrusive online advertisements, cause unwanted browser redirects, and gather personally identifiable information.
How did Light Manager install on my computer?
Light Manager has an official promotion website, however, developers also distribute this app using a legitimate software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party applications with regular (mostly legitimate) software.
Developers use this method, since users often do not pay enough attention during the download and installation processes - they rush and skip most/all steps. Therefore, developers intentionally hide all third party programs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings of these procedures. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - closely analyze each step using the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. Secondly, decline all offers to download/install additional applications and cancel those already included. It is highly probable that bundled software will be malicious and should, thus, never be installed.
