Any Angle Ads

What is Any Angle?

Any Angle is one of several hundred rogue browser plug-ins created by a company called SuperWeb LLC. The developers claim that their product will enhance the Internet browsing experience by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and other features.

This may seem legitimate and useful functionality, however, Any Angle is considered to be a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. The main reason for these negative associations is a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' employed in Any Angle add-on distribution.

Bundling is stealth installation of third party apps together with regular software, and therefore, users often inadvertently install applications such as Any Angle together with free software downloaded from freeware download websites.

After system infiltration, Any Angle delivers numerous intrusive online ads including banner, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, full-page, and search ads. Advertisements generated by this adware are likely to redirect to bogus websites containing infectious content, and thus, clicking them exposes your system to risk of infection.

Ads by Bold Letters

What is Bold Letters?

Developers of the Bold Letters browser plug-in (SuperWeb LLC) present it as a legitimate tool to improve the Internet browsing experience, since it supposedly enables various useful features such as coupons and comparison shopping. This functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, Bold Letters is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.

The add-on is mostly distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. This method is used to stealthily install third party applications when user installs regular software, and therefore, Bold Letters adware is often distributed together with free software downloadable on freeware download websites.

Following successful infiltration on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox), Bold Letters displays various intrusive online ads including pop-up, search, banner, interstitial, transitional, full-page, and other similar advertisement types.

Most of these ads redirect to rogue websites containing infectious content, and therefore, clicking them might cause further high-risk adware or malware infections.

Moviesfanatic.com Redirect

What is moviesfanatic.com?

Moviesfanatic.com is a newer version of the default-search.net browser hijacker. This bogus application is distributed together with regular software using the 'bundling' method (stealth installation of third party apps together with the chosen software).

After system infiltration, this rogue app hijacks Internet browsers and assigns the default search engine to default-search.net, and homepage to moviesfanatic.com. Commonly, browser hijacking apps install several small programs called 'helper objects' to prevent users from reverting these changes.

Research shows that moviesfanatic.com redirects to the yahoo.com search website, however, there is no guarantee that redirects by moviesfanatic.com will remain safe. Many users do not pay enough attention during the download of free software, and therefore, freeware download websites are the main source of these infections.

Los Pollos Hermanos Virus

What is Los Pollos Hermanos?

Cable network AMC’s popular TV series, Breaking Bad, which ended after five successful seasons in 2013, is in the spotlight once again thanks to a group of hackers who have modelled a new ransomware variant after the hit show.

The new malware variant confronts users with a message complete with the Los Pollos Hermanos logo – a fictional fried chicken restaurant featured in the television show. The malware encrypts all files on the infected computer and threatens victims with deletion of all encrypted files unless a ransom is paid.

The ransom, at time of writing, is $1,000 AUD (~$791 USD). Researchers from security firm, Symantec, were the first to discover the new malware and according to an official report released by the company, the Breaking Bad ransomware is currently sweeping Australia and could reach the shores of the United States and other English-speaking countries in the near future.

BitCryptor is a ransomware virus that infiltrates operating systems via infected email messages, exploit kits, and fake downloads (for example, rogue video players and fake Flash updates). After successful infiltration, this malicious program encrypts (AES 256 - symmetrical encryption algorithm) files stored on computers (including .odt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, psd, .cdr, .mp3, .raw, .jpeg, .gif, .bmp, and .txt files among many others) and demands payment of 1 Bitcoin (at time of writing, approximately $240 USD) within 66 hours.

Cyber criminals responsible for releasing this rogue program ensure that it executes on all Windows versions including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. As well as displaying a window with encryption information, BitCryptor also changes the desktop wallpaper, which reads 'Your files have been encrypted! - BitCryptor'.
