Wedyoulife POP-UP Scam (Mac)

What is "Wedyoulife"?

Wedyoulife is a family of scam web pages designed to promote dubious applications. Wedyoulife specifically endorses the Smart Mac Booster app. The site uses scare tactics to trick users into downloading/installing the product it promotes. It displays a message alerting users that their devices are infected and advertises an application allegedly capable of fixing the 'issues'.

You are strongly advised against downloading/installing any apps that these websites promote - all threats they detect are fake. Furthermore, the advertised applications are often bogus and nonoperational. Websites such as Wedyoulife are usually opened by Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already present on the device.

What is SmarterHD?

SmarterHD is promoted as a tool capable of improving the browsing experience by providing fast searches, accurate search results, etc. In fact, it is classified as adware. SmarterHD runs intrusive advertisement campaigns. I.e., it displays various unwanted and even harmful ads.

It is also categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA) due to its dubious proliferation methods. Note that most adware-type apps have data tracking capabilities, which they employ to monitor browsing habits.

What is UP Tab?

UP Tab (also known as CoinUp) is a browser hijacker, and yet endorsed as a tool that provides current time and date directly from the browser's new tab/window. It operates by making unauthorized changes to browsers and promoting its associated fake search engine (coinup.org).

This rogue application also has data tracking capabilities, which it employs to record users' browsing activity. Due to its dubious proliferation methods, UP Tab is categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).

What is appleconnect[.]co?

appleconnect[.]co is a deceptive website that is disguised as an Apple Support website. Cyber criminals use it to trick people into allowing them to control computers remotely. To achieve this, they encourage people to give access to the computer through FastSupport, a legitimate website that controls systems via the GoToAssist toolset.

This web page is designed to download a file named "TeamViewerQS.dmg", the installer of TeamViewer. The official Apple company has nothing to do with appleconnect[.]co. Therefore, do not to trust this or any other unofficial sites and, more importantly, do not give cyber criminals permission to control your system remotely.

   
Uta Ransomware

What is Uta?

Uta is malicious software that was discovered by Raby. The program belongs to the Crysis/Dharma ransomware family and operates by encrypting data and keeping it locked, until a ransom is paid. During the encryption process, all files are renamed with a unique ID number (generated individually for each victim), the developer's email address, and the ".uta" extension.

For example, "1.jpg" might be renamed to "1.jpg.id-1E857D00.[jacklee@airmail.cc].uta" or similar for all affected files. After encryption is complete, Uta creates a text file ("FILES ENCRYPTED.txt"), which it stores on the desktop, and opens a pop-up window.

What is BlackRemote?

BlackRemote is the name of a remote access/administration tool (RAT). This software can be purchased by anyone from its download website. It allows users to control other computers (that have the RAT installed) remotely. Unfortunately, this tool is often used by various cyber criminals.

RATs are popular amongst these people, and BlackRemote's developer also promote this RAT on various hacker forums. Cyber criminals try to trick people into installing the software so that they can steal personal, sensitive information and perform various tasks to enable them to generate revenue. In any case, we strongly recommend that you uninstall BlackRemote immediately.

   
Tarmac Trojan (Mac)

What kind of malware is Tarmac?

Tarmac is malicious software categorized as a trojan and also known by the name OSX/Tarmac. This trojan is distributed through other malware called OSX/Shlayer.D, which is a new variant of the OSX/Shlayer malicious program. OSX/Shlayer.D typically injects Tarmac via fake Adobe Flash updaters/installers.
