Content Cleaner Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Content Cleaner?
The Content Cleaner application claims to improve users' Internet browsing security by allowing them to delete all temporary files. Initially, Content Cleaner may seem a legitimate and useful application, however, this app is often distributed as a 'bundle' with other apps. It infiltrates systems without users’ permission and is, hence, classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Although Content Cleaner is a legitimate program, many PUPs are dubious. This type of software often generates intrusive online advertisements, causes unwanted browser redirects, and collects browsing-related data. The generated advertisements (pop-up, interstitial, transitional, full-page, search, banner, etc.) do not originate from users' visited websites.
They usually conceal underlying web content, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience. In addition, some lead to malicious sites containing bogus content. Thus, clicking them is risky and may lead to further adware or malware infections. In addition, these applications collect various information that may be personally identifiable.
Recorded data is shared with third parties who can misuse personal data to generate revenue. Tracking of browsing information can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Content Cleaner poses no direct threat to users' privacy or Internet browsing safety, however, by stealthily running in the background, this app uses computer resources, thereby diminishing system performance. If you believe that Content Cleaner infiltrated your system without permission, uninstall this PUP immediately.
Research shows that many PUPs falsely claim to provide 'valuable' features to trick users to install, however, after infiltrating the system, they provide no real value for users. Their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than enabling any of the promised functions, these apps generate intrusive online advertisements, cause unwanted browser redirects, and track Internet browsing activity.
How did Content Cleaner install on my computer?
Research shows that Content Cleaner is mostly distributed as a 'bundle' with other software. Developers hide this PUP within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings (that are often skipped by many users). By rushing the download/installation processes, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
The developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated (which is dependent on the number of distributed PUPs) and, thus, do not properly disclose installation of rogue software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. The download and installation processes should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Bundled software (that should be cancelled) is mostly concealed and, therefore, it is important to closely analyze each step of these processes.
