Interstitial Information Ads
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Interstitial Information advertisement?
"Interstitial Information?" is a type of intrusive online advertisement that conceals visited website content. The ads are delivered by potentially unwanted adware-type programs.
By giving fake promises to enhance Internet browsing activity, adware-type applications such as InterYield are designed to give the impression of legitimate software, thereby tricking users to install. After infiltrating the system, however, these applications simply generate intrusive online ads and track users' Internet browsing activity.
Most PUPs generate more than one type of ad. These may include banner, coupon, pop-up, and search ads. Advertisements generated by adware-type programs can appear identical to regular software/apps and, therefore, many users are unaware that they do not originate from their visited websites.
They are delivered using 'virtual layer' (a tool allowing placement of third party graphical content on any site) and overlay underlying website content - thus, diminishing the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect users to malicious sites. Clicking them risks further adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, ad-generating apps usually monitor Internet browsing activity. After recording information such as IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, geo-location, and other similar data, the developers of PUPs share the details with third party companies.
Some of this information can be personally identifiable. Therefore, if you feel that you are encountering intrusive online advertisements, uninstall all recently-installed potentially unwanted programs.
There are tens of rogue applications that generate interstitial ads including, for example, Money Viking, Bronze Aid, Web Shield, and Dealz.
Although all claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience, none provide users with any real value. The purpose of adware-type programs is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than enabling the functionality promised, potentially unwanted programs generate ads, continually track Internet browsing activity, and often cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did adware install on my computer?
Adware-type applications are often distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. Research shows that many users do not express enough caution during the software download and installation processes. For this reason, developers conceal potentially unwanted programs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
Therefore, by rushing these processes and skipping most steps, users often install bogus programs inadvertently. Revenue generated is dependent on the volume of adware distributed and, thus, developers do not properly disclose installation of rogue apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. To prevent this situation, the download and installation processes should be rushed. Closely analyze these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. There's a high probability that additionally-included software will be malicious and, therefore, users should decline all offers to download or install third party software.
