InstallCore adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is installCore?
According to the developers, installCore helps users develop a proper installer for their software - "The installCore white label Download Manager supports your entire software catalog. To ensure an optimal user experience, our localization features help make sure their installers "speak" to them in the right language, and download acceleration technology means the process takes about a third less of their time.".
While installCore develops legitimate software download clients and installers, users must be informed that they are commonly used to market applications that are categorized as adware, as well as a potentially unwanted programs (PUP). InstallCore download clients have an option to opt-out of installing additional software however users commonly skip these steps and end up installing adware or browser hijackers.
It is worth mentioning that both installCore and the applications that it's distributed with generate various intrusive online advertisements. All of those ads (e.g., banner, coupon, pop-up, etc.) are delivered using virtual layer, which enables placement of third party graphical content on users' visited websites.
Therefore, be aware that none of those ads originate from your visited sites, which means that they conceal the underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing Internet browsing quality. Moreover, be aware that at first glance these ads do not differ from the regular ones.
However, users should know that some of them redirect users to malicious sites, what can easily end up in further high-risk adware or malware infection. Users should know that potentially unwanted applications that are promoted by installCore download clients commonly monitor users' Internet browsing activity.
IP addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries - these are only few examples from a long list of data types gathered by those apps. Many users do not realize that this kind of information can be personally identifiable.
For this reason, they should know that the developers of adware-type programs share every bit of collected data with third party companies, who often misuse this personal data to generate earnings. This kind of behavior can eventually lead to serious privacy issues or even an identity theft.
Research results show that vast majority of PUPs are very similar. All of them falsely claim to enhance users' Internet browsing activity with an intention of tricking them into installation. The truth is that none of those application actually provide the promised functionality.
Adware-type programs are meant to generate income for the developers, therefore, instead of providing the promised functionality, these apps generate obtrusive online advertisements, as well as continually track users' Internet browsing activity.
How did adware install on my computer?
As we've mentioned before, potentially unwanted applications are distributed as a bundle (using installcore or other download clients and installers) along with other adware-type programs.
Research results show that vast majority of users lack attention when downloading and installing software, for this reason, bundled applications are most likely to be hidden within 'Custom' or either 'Advanced' settings.
By recklessly rushing download/installation processes and skipping almost all of the steps, users end up unwillingly installing rogue software. They expose the system to risk of further infections, and put their own privacy into threat.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The only way to prevent infiltration of adware-type program is to pay close attention when downloading and installing software.
Users must realize that bundled applications usually hide within 'Custom/Advanced' settings, therefore, not a single step of the download/installation process should be skipped. On top of that, there's a high probability that bundled software will be rogue, hence, it should never be installed.
