What is Simple Media Player?
Simple Media Player is a deceptive application claiming to be a high-end video player. The promised features (superb quality, high resolution, etc.) often trick users into believing that this app is legitimate and useful, however, Simple Media Player is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The reason for these negative associations is Simple Media Player's behavior, which includes stealth installation without users' consent, display of intrusive online advertisements, and tracking of Internet browsing activity.
Advertisements generated by Simple Media Player include pop-up, banner and coupon ads. The appearance of these may not differ from regular ads and seem harmless, however, some can redirect to malicious sites. Thus, there is a high probability that clicking them will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
They are displayed using a virtual layer, which enables placement of third party graphical content on users' visited websites. Therefore, none of these ads originate from the visited sites and conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Simple Media Player gathers various data such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and so on. Many users are unaware that information collected by adware-type applications might be personally identifiable.
Furthermore, developers later share it with third parties, and thus, having Simple Media Player installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you are concerned with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, uninstall Simple Media Player immediately.
Simple Media Player shares many similarities with other adware-type applications, especially V-Bates Shopper and Shopperz. These applications attempt to trick users to install by offering a variety of useful features. This is merely part of a scam. Adware-type applications provide none of the functionality promised.
Their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers by delivering intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click' - PPC - advertising model) and recording personal data (which is later shared with third parties to generate revenue).
How did Simple Media Player install on my computer?
Although Simple Media Player has an official download website, it often infiltrates systems during installation of other software. This deceptive software marketing method is called 'bundling' - stealth installation of additional programs with regular software/apps.
Research shows that adware-type applications such as Simple Media Player are often hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation settings. Many users are unaware of this and skip the section. In doing so, they expose their systems to high-risk infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent adware-type computer infections, be attentive during download and installation of all software. Download and install using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical'. PUPs are often hidden, and by closely analyzing each step, you will be able to cancel them.
