Cassiopessa.com Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is cassiopessa.com?
Cassiopesa.com is considered to be a browser hijacker, since it installs on Internet browsers using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' and modifies browser settings. Cassiopesa infiltrates Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox by assigning the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine settings to cassiopesa.com.
Furthermore, Cassiopesa (as with other typical browser hijackers) installs several applications called 'helper objects', which prevent users from reverting these changes.
The bundling method is used to stealthily install additional programs during download and/or installation of regular software and, therefore, this rogue app is often distributed together with free software downloadable on freeware download websites.
Download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, and many other similar websites, monetize their traffic and free services via small programs called 'download clients' (also called 'installers', 'download tools', 'download managers', etc.) According to these websites, download clients significantly ease the download process, however, they merely offer (or simply conceal) installation of third party applications together with the chosen software.
It is claimed that this promoted software is genuine and virus-free, however, it is mostly adware or malware. Following computer infection, users observe intrusive online advertisements that commonly lead to dubious websites containing infectious content. Additionally, most collect personally identifiable information, which is later shared with third parties.
This behavior might cause further computer infections and serious privacy issues and, therefore, you are strongly advised against the use of cassiopesa.com.
Many browser hijacking applications have similar or identical behavior and claim to enable various 'useful' features, however, most redirect to dubious websites.
For instance, navegaki.com, palikan.com, and usearchmedia.com also claim to improve the Internet browsing experience, however, their purpose is to generate revenue by causing unwanted browser redirects to increase the traffic of certain websites.
To avoid such computer infections, closely inspect the free software download process to ensure that no other applications are included. In addition, downloaded applications should be installed with the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any bundled apps listed for installation and allow you to cancel them.
