What is walermis?
Developed by SuperWeb LLC, Walermis is a bogus browser extension claiming to enable features such as coupons and comparison shopping to improve the Internet browsing experience. While such functionality may seem legitimate and useful, this browser plug-in is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These negative associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) used in walermis adware distribution.
This rogue application installs on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox without users' permission, and then displays various intrusive online advertisements including search, interstitial, transitional, full-page, pop-up, coupon, banner, etc.
Ads generated by walermis often redirect to rogue websites, and therefore, clicking them exposes your computer to risk of infection.
Furthermore, walermis collects various Internet browsing-related information including IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, etc.
This recorded information is mostly related to software or hardware, however, it may also contain personally identifiable details, and therefore, having walermis installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Walermis is identical to hundreds of other applications developed by SuperWeb LLC.
These applications are released under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
Although they claim to enable useful features, none provide any real value - the purpose of adware-type apps is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive ads and sharing collected data with third parties. You are strongly advised to uninstall walermis from your system immediately.
At time of research, walermis (together with most other adware) was distributed using small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, downloads.com, and many others.
Download clients are used by these websites as traffic and free services monetization tools, since they offer installation of additional applications together with the chosen software. Although these additional applications are described as '100% legitimate and virus-free', most are categorized as adware or malware.
To avoid computer infections, closely analyse each step of the free software download procedure and ensure that no extra applications included.
Furthermore, choose the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options when installing downloaded software - this will reveal any concealed apps listed for installation and allow you to cancel them. If you have installed walermis, follow the instructions below to eliminate this adware from your system.
