PaceItUp Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is PaceItUp?
PaceItUp is a rogue browser extension developed by Virtue Interactive Ltd. This application claims to improve the speed of users' Internet connections. Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that PaceItUp is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The developers of this rogue browser extension employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install PaceItUp on Internet browsers without users' permission.
After successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, PaceItUp generates intrusive online ads and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
Advertisements generated by this PUP include (but are not limited to) banner, display, pop-up, and pop-under ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since this potentially unwanted program records various software and hardware information that may be personally identifiable.
For example: Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geo-locations), search queries entered into search engines, website URLs visited, pages viewed, cookies, web beacons, unique identifier numbers, and other similar data.
This information tracking may lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall PaceItUp from your system.
PaceItUp is similar to other rogue applications that use bundling as an installation method. Examples include EzDownloader, Safe Web, Coupon Alert among many others. None of these applications (including PaceItUp) are useful to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by sharing collected data with third parties and displaying intrusive online advertisements.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small download programs (called 'download managers', 'download clients', 'installers', etc.) used by freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com.
Download programs are used by these websites as free services and traffic monetization tools, since they offer installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often leads to high-risk adware or malware infections. This situation can be prevented by closely observing each step of the free software download procedure and clicking 'Decline' if installation of any additional programs is offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If your computer is infected with PaceItUp, or other similar adware, read the removal guide below and uninstall this adware from your Internet browsers.
