What is 123HD-Plus?
123HD-Plus is a rogue browser extension claiming to enhance the quality users' YouTube video experience. This add-on is compatible with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. The developers of 123HD-Plus employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install this rogue browser plug-in on Internet browsers without users' consent.
Bundling is a way to distribute applications together with other software, and for this reason, most users inadvertently install 123HD-Plus when downloading free software from freeware download websites. Although this browser plug-in may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that 123HD-Plus is considered to be adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Note that 123HD-Plus is identical to another virus called 123HD-Ready, which was previously distributed by the same developers. After successful infiltration on Internet browsers, this PUP generates various intrusive online advertisements such as coupon, pop-up/under, banner, transitional, in-text, and price comparison ads.
Clicking these advertisements is likely to cause high-risk adware or malware infections. Furthermore, this rogue browser add-on continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, geographic locations, website URLs visited, cookies and other details that may be personally identifiable.
This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall this adware from your Internet browsers.
Research shows that 123HD-Plus is similar to other PUPs that use bundling as an installation method. Some examples include Search Donkey, You-Bar, and Feven among many others. Neither 123HD-Plus, nor any of these other add-ons, provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads.
Most current freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com employ small download programs to monetize their traffic and free services.
These small programs (called 'download managers', 'installers', or 'download clients') offer installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser extensions together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless downloading and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware or malware.
This situation can be prevented by closely studying each step of the free software download procedure and declining installation of any additional programs offered.
If you are installing software downloaded from the Internet, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If you have installed 123HD-Plus, read the removal instructions provided to uninstall this adware from your Internet browsers.
