What is TowerTilt?
The TowerTilt browser extension claims to improve the quality of users' Internet browsing experience by displaying website trust ratings, websites containing related content, enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and adding other functionality. TowerTilt was developed by SuperWeb LLC and is optimized for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.
On initial inspection, this may seem a legitimate add-on, however, TowerTilt is categorized as a potentially unwanted application or adware. This rogue browser extension uses a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install on browsers without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration, TowerTilt generates various intrusive online advertisement such as text-link, banner, search, transitional, interstitial, and full page ads.
Furthermore, users' Internet browsing activity is continually tracked since this potentially unwanted application records IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, URLs visited, search queries entered, pages viewed, and other similar hardware and software information.
This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues, identity theft, or malware infections. There are many rogue browser add-ons identical to TowerTilt including, for example, Maucampo, Laflurla, and Norpalla. SuperWeb LLC intentionally releases identical plug-ins under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.
Neither TowerTilt, nor any of these other extensions, add any real value for the user - their main purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Most adware is distributed via 'download clients' within freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com, and many others. These sites employ these small programs to monetize their free services by offering installation of advertised browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
Through reckless download and installation of freeware, users risk computer infection with adware. To prevent installation of TowerTilt, or other potentially unwanted applications, closely observe each step when downloading free software and decline installation of any additional applications offered.
During installation of downloaded software, choose the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Typical' or 'Quick' - this will reveal any hidden applications attempting stealth infiltration on your computer and you will be able to opt-out.
Users who have already Installed TowerTilt and observe "Powered by TowerTilt", "Ads by TowerTilt", and "TowerTilt Deals" advertisements when browsing the Internet, should follow this removal guide to remove TowerTilt adware from their Internet browsers.
