Damage level: Medium

What is the fake "Check MoveDrop Eligibility" website?

"Check MoveDrop Eligibility" is a scam that we discovered on movement-network[.]xyz (could be hosted elsewhere). It imitates Movement Network (movementnetwork.xyz) running an airdrop. Users are lured into exposing their digital wallets to a cryptocurrency drainer.

It must be emphasized that this scheme is not associated with the actual Movement Network or any other existing projects and entities.

Check MoveDrop Eligibility scam

IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not review crypto projects, please do your own research when investing money.

Federal Trade Comission (FTC) states that since the start of 2021, more than 46,000 people have reported losing over $1 billion in crypto to scams – that's about one out of every four dollars reported lost, more than any other payment method.

Fake "Check MoveDrop Eligibility" website overview

We found this scam on movement-network[.]xyz, yet keep in mind that it could also be hosted on other domains. The fake page impersonates the Movement Network (movementnetwork.xyz) – a platform for aspiring developers that allows them to create the next generation of decentralized applications (dApps). The scheme entices users into exposing their cryptowallets by promoting an airdrop.

It must be reiterated that this giveaway is fake, and this scam is not associated with the real Movement Network or any other existing platforms, projects, or entities.

When the "CHECK ELIGIBILITY" button is pressed, the user is prompted to connect their digital wallet. Doing so signs a malicious contract that facilitates the crypto drainer. Basically, funds are transferred from victims' wallets to those in the scammers' possession.

These transactions are automated and may appear vague – thus, they can remain unnoticed for a significant amount of time. Some drainers can approximate the value of digital assets and prioritize their theft.

It must be mentioned that due to the nearly untraceable nature of these transactions – they cannot be reversed. Therefore, victims of scams like this fake "Check MoveDrop Eligibility" site cannot retrieve the stolen assets.

Cryptocurrency drainer scam examples

We have written about numerous online scams; "$PLENA Token Claims", "Mantle Rewards Station", "Mantra ($OM) Airdrop", and "PepeCoin Original Edition" are just a few of our latest articles on drainers.

Aside from using draining mechanisms, cryptocurrency-targeting schemes can seek wallet log-in credentials or trick users into manually transferring funds to scammer-owned wallets.

However, the Internet is full of various scams that differ in appearance and utilized mechanisms, yet their end goal is the same – to generate revenue at victims' expense. Therefore, we highly recommend being vigilant when browsing and investing.

How did I open a scam website?

Online scams are predominantly endorsed through malvertising (intrusive ads), websites using rogue advertising networks, spam (e.g., emails, DMs/PMs, SMSes, social media/ forum posts, browser notifications, etc.), typosquatting (misspelled URLs), and adware.

It is noteworthy that cryptocurrency drainers are often promoted through intrusive pop-up adverts. These pop-ups may be fully functional drainers themselves; they entice users into "linking" wallets by promising various boons. Advertisements of this kind have been encountered on legitimate sites that had been hacked.

Additionally, crypto scams are prevalent on social media networks. These spam posts and direct/private messages can be made using accounts stolen from real projects, companies, organizations, celebrities, influencers, etc. If the endorsed scheme aligns with the content ordinarily posted by the account – this can create an incredible impression of legitimacy.

How to avoid visiting scam websites?

Caution is paramount to online safety. Be wary of advertisements and websites making promises that sound too good to be true. Take note of URLs and type them attentively. Do not use sites that offer pirated content or other dubious services (e.g., Torrenting, illegal streaming/downloading, etc.), as these webpages usually employ rogue advertising networks.

Do not permit suspicious pages to deliver browser notifications; instead, ignore or deny their requests (i.e., click "Block", "Block Notifications", etc.). Be careful with incoming emails and other messages; attachments or links present in suspect/irrelevant mail must not be opened.

Download only from official/trustworthy sources and treat installations with vigilance (e.g., study terms and options, use "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt out of additional apps, extensions, etc.) – to prevent bundled/harmful software (like adware) from infiltrating the system.

If your computer is already infected, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate all threats.

How to identify a pop-up scam?

Pop-up windows with various fake messages are a common type of lures cybercriminals use. They collect sensitive personal data, trick Internet users into calling fake tech support numbers, subscribe to useless online services, invest in shady cryptocurrency schemes, etc.

While in the majority of cases these pop-ups don't infect users' devices with malware, they can cause direct monetary loss or could result in identity theft.

  • Spelling mistakes and non-professional images - Closely inspect the information displayed in a pop-up. Spelling mistakes and unprofessional images could be a sign of a scam.
  • Sense of urgency - Countdown timer with a couple of minutes on it, asking you to enter your personal information or subscribe to some online service.
  • Statements that you won something - If you haven't participated in a lottery, online competition, etc., and you see a pop-up window stating that you won.
  • Computer or mobile device scan - A pop-up window that scans your device and informs of detected issues - is undoubtedly a scam; webpages cannot perform such actions.
