AllaKore malware overview

However, later variants of this RAT underwent significant improvements.
These AllaKore versions are well-obfuscated programs with a broader list of functionalities. In addition to exfiltrating files, AllaKore can infiltrate (upload) and execute them. Hence, this trojan can be used to cause chain infections (i.e., download/install additional malware or malicious components) – thus, there is potential for notable capability expansion.
The RAT can take screenshots and record victims' screens. It likewise has keylogging abilities (i.e., recording keystrokes – keyboard input).
New iterations also have a host of commands specifically tailored for malicious banking activities targeting Mexican banks and cryptocurrency-related platforms. AllaKore seeks to acquire banking credentials and verification/authentication-related data.
This trojan also operates as clipper malware. It can detect content copied into the clipboard (copy-paste buffer) and change it – thereby making victims paste altered information. This functionality is commonly used to reroute outgoing cryptocurrency transactions by replacing recipients' wallet addresses with ones of attacker-owned cryptowallets.
Keep in mind that since malware developers often improve upon their creations, it is not unlikely that future variants of AllaKore will have additional functions or utilize different techniques.

Remote access trojan examples

How did AllaKore infiltrate my computer?
Older versions of the AllaKore RAT were primarily spread in RAR archive formats. Later iterations were observed being proliferated in compressed MSI files containing a .NET downloader. In the campaigns noted in Mexico, the downloader checked the infiltrated system's geolocation data prior to continuing with AllaKore's download.
As mentioned in the introduction, these attacks sought to infect large entities that directly report to IMSS – the Mexican Social Security Institute (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social). Some of the targeted sectors included Agriculture, Banking, Commercial Services, Manufacturing, Retail, and Transportation.
Phishing and social engineering tactics are the bread and butter of cyber criminals, and the threat actors proliferating AllaKore are no exception.
The phishing campaigns distributing this RAT used lures associated with the IMSS, such as documents and updates for the SIPARE payment system, IDSE software (e.g., "guia_de_soluciones_idse.pdf"), and so on. It must be mentioned that other lures and methods could be utilized in AllaKore's proliferation.
Virulent files come in various formats, e.g., archives (RAR, ZIP, etc.), executables (.exe, .run, etc.), documents (PDF, Microsoft Office, Microsoft OneNote, etc.), JavaScript, and so on. When a malicious file is executed, run, or otherwise opened – the infection process is jumpstarted.
Malware is predominately distributed through drive-by (stealthy/deceptive) downloads, malicious attachments/links in spam mail (e.g., emails, DMs/PMs, SMSes, etc.), dubious download sources (e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.), online scams, malvertising, pirated programs/media, illegal software activation tools ("cracks"), and fake updates.
What is more, some malicious programs can self-spread via local networks and removable storage devices (e.g., external hard drives, USB flash drives, etc.).
How to avoid installation of malware?

Windows 8 users: Start Windows 8 is Safe Mode with Networking - Go to Windows 8 Start Screen, type Advanced, in the search results select Settings. Click Advanced startup options, in the opened "General PC Settings" window, select Advanced startup.
Click the "Restart now" button. Your computer will now restart into the "Advanced Startup options menu". Click the "Troubleshoot" button, and then click the "Advanced options" button. In the advanced option screen, click "Startup settings".
Click the "Restart" button. Your PC will restart into the Startup Settings screen. Press F5 to boot in Safe Mode with Networking.

Windows 10 users: Click the Windows logo and select the Power icon. In the opened menu click "Restart" while holding "Shift" button on your keyboard. In the "choose an option" window click on the "Troubleshoot", next select "Advanced options".
In the advanced options menu select "Startup Settings" and click on the "Restart" button. In the following window you should click the "F5" button on your keyboard. This will restart your operating system in safe mode with networking.

Extract the downloaded archive and run the Autoruns.exe file.
In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.
Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.
You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files. After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".
After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer. Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.
