How to uninstall the StyleHill adware-type application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is StyleHill?
StyleHill is a rogue application that we discovered while inspecting new submissions to VirusTotal. After investigating this piece of software, we determined that it is adware belonging to the AdLoad malware family.
StyleHill adware overview
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It is designed to display ads on visited webpages and/or other interfaces. These advertisements promote online scams, unreliable/hazardous software, and malware. Furthermore, some intrusive adverts can even perform stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
It is noteworthy that while legitimate products and services may be encountered via these advertisements – they are highly unlikely to be promoted by their developers. Instead, it is most probable that this endorsement is performed by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs in order to acquire illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software might not deliver intrusive ad campaigns if certain conditions are unsuitable (e.g., incompatible browser/system or user geolocation, specific websites are not visited, etc.). However, even if StyleHill does not display adverts – its presence on a system endangers device/user safety.
This rogue application may have browser-hijacking abilities since they are common for AdLoad adware, although we did not observe any such traits during testing.
What is more, StyleHill likely collects sensitive user information. Targeted data may include: URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related information, and so forth. The gathered data can be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.
In summary, the presence of advertising-supported software like StyleHill on devices can result in system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
LoyalShroud, EssentialLoop, and SearchProvided are just a couple examples of adware-type apps that we have analyzed recently.
This software typically appears legitimate and innocuous. It also offers a broad range of useful and advantageous functionalities. However, these functions seldom work as promised, and in most cases – they do not work at all. Keep in mind that even if a piece of software operates as indicated by its promotional material – that is not a guarantee of either legitimacy or safety.
How did StyleHill install on my computer?
"Bundling" – packing ordinary program installation setups with unwanted/malicious additions – is used to distribute adware. The risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the device is increased by downloading from untrustworthy sources (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installation processes (e.g., ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.).
Adware can also have "official" promotional webpages, and it is commonly pushed through scam websites. Users primarily enter such pages via redirects caused by sites that use rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening abilities).
Intrusive adverts are used to spread advertising-supported software as well. When clicked on, some of these advertisements can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We highly recommend researching software and downloading it from official/verified channels. Furthermore, installation must be treated with caution, e.g., by reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, tools, etc.
We advise being careful while browsing since fake and dangerous content usually appears legitimate. For example, intrusive ads may look harmless yet redirect to unreliable/questionable websites (e.g., gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.).
Should you keep experiencing adverts/redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with StyleHill, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
