Removing the Search-Zone browser hijacker and the redirects it causes
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Search-Zone?
While inspecting deceptive sites, our research team discovered one endorsing the Search-Zone browser extension. After analyzing this piece of software, we learned that it operates as a browser hijacker. Search-Zone modifies browsers in order to cause to the searchzone.xyz fake search engine.
Search-Zone browser hijacker overview
Browser hijackers reassign the URLs of browsers' homepages, default search engines, and new tabs/windows to the promoted addresses. With Search-Zone installed onto our test machine, new browser tabs/windows opened and Web searches performed via the URL bar - resulted in redirects to the searchzone.xyz website.
Additionally, browser-hijacking software uses persistence-ensuring techniques to prevent browser recovery, and this applies to Search-Zone.
Fake search engines are rarely capable of providing search results, so they redirect to legitimate ones. Searchzone.xyz redirected to the Google search engine (google.com) during our analysis. Keep in mind that where such a site lands may vary based on certain factors (e.g., user geolocation, etc.).
Furthermore, Search-Zone has data-tracking abilities. Browser hijackers typically target: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related information, and so on. The collected data can then be monetized via sale to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
To summarize, the presence of software like Search-Zone on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples
Search-Mgr, Tick Tab Clock, and Search-Monster are merely a few examples of browser hijackers that we have analyzed recently.
Browser-hijacking software usually appears legitimate and offers various functionalities. However, they are seldom operational. It must be emphasized that even if the promised features of a browser hijacker do work - that is not a sign of its legitimacy.
How did Search-Zone install on my computer?
We obtained Search-Zone from a deceptive site. Dubious software-promoting webpages are primarily accessed via redirects caused by websites using rogue advertising networks, mistyped URLs, intrusive adverts, spam browser notifications, or installed adware.
Browser hijackers can also be bundled (packed together) with ordinary programs. Download from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., skipped steps and sections, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently permitting bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements proliferate browser-hijacking software as well. When clicked on, some of the ads can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user permission.
How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified sources. Furthermore, when installing - read terms, study available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out of all additions.
We advise being cautious while browsing since fraudulent and malicious content usually appears harmless. For example, intrusive ads look ordinary/innocuous yet redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
In case of encounters with such adverts/redirects, check the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Search-Zone, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
