How to eliminate the notifications/ads displayed by the pcprotect.name site
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What kind of page is pcprotect[.]name?
While looking through dubious webpages, our research team found the pcprotect[.]name rogue site. It promotes scams, pushes browser notification spam, and redirects visitors to other (potentially unreliable/harmful) pages.
Users typically enter sites like pcprotect[.]name through redirects caused by webpages that use rogue advertising networks.
Pcprotect[.]name overview
It is noteworthy that the behavior of rogue webpages might depend on the visitor's IP address (geolocation). In other words, this information may dictate the content encountered on and via such sites.
When we inspected pcprotect[.]name, it presented us with a scam disguised as an alert from McAfee. It was similar to "Your Computer May Be At Risk With An Expired McAfee License", "McAfee Total Protection has expired", "McAfee Total Protection - Your PC might be infected with viruses!", and countless other scams.
While this scheme does not provide outright deceitful information (i.e., it is true that a device without an anti-virus is more at risk of various infections), this promotion still uses scare tactics that are frowned upon in advertising.
At the time of research, the scam on pcprotect[.]name did redirect to McAfee's official website - however, that might not be the case indefinitely.
Additionally, this deceptive content is in no way associated with the McAfee anti-virus or McAfee Corp.; it even states so on the page - "This website is privately owned and is neither operated by, no[r] affiliated with McAfee, LLC./ This site contains affiliate links to products. We may receive a commission for purchases made through these links". It is not uncommon for scammers to abuse the affiliate programs of genuine products in order to receive illegitimate commissions.
However, scams of this kind are more often used to endorse fake, untrustworthy, and even dangerous software. There are no guarantees that pcprotect[.]name will continue to redirect to the legitimate McAfee website. Therefore, we strongly advise downloading software only from official and verified sources.
Furthermore, pcprotect[.]name requests visitors to enable it to deliver browser notifications. If allowed, this website will display notifications that advertise online scams, untrustworthy/harmful sites and software, and even malware.
In summary, via webpages like pcprotect[.]name - users can experience system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Browser notification spam in general
We have analyzed thousands of rogue sites; pc-tools-2022[.]xyz, findallmoneysurvey[.]top, omouswomani[.]xyz, and houbekuwucoo[.]com are merely a few examples.
These websites deliver browser notifications that promote deceptive and malicious content. Note that any genuine products encountered through these ads are most likely endorsed by scammers abusing their affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.
How did pcprotect[.]name gain permission to deliver spam notifications?
Websites require user consent to display browser notifications. Therefore, you have likely accessed pcprotect[.]name at some point and permitted it to deliver these advertisements (i.e., clicked "Allow", "Allow Notifications", etc.).
How to prevent deceptive sites from delivering spam notifications?
To avoid receiving unwanted browser notifications, do not consent to their delivery from suspicious websites (i.e., do not click "Allow", "Allow Notifications", etc.). Instead, we advise ignoring or denying notification requests (i.e., clicking "Block", "Block Notifications", etc.).
Should your browser keep randomly force-opening questionable sites unprompted - it might be caused by adware installed onto it or the system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
