What is NetDooka?
Discovered by TrendMicro, NetDooka is a multi-component malware framework distributed through a malicious PPI (Pay-Per-Install) service. Due to the nature of malware PPI services, exactly what malicious components are installed can vary.
The observed infection chains compromised a loader and dropper, with the final payload being the NetDooka RAT (Remote Access Trojan). Some variants included a protection driver, which attempts to prevent malware removal efforts. RATs are malicious programs designed to enable remote/access over infected machines. Hence, these trojans tend to be multifunctional and highly versatile.
NetDooka malware overview
The primary elements of NetDooka's infection chain consist of an initial payload, followed by a loader that preps the system for the following components, and the process culminates in the installation of the RAT.
According to TrendMicro's report, the infection process begins with the victim downloading PrivateLoader. It has been noted that this malicious program was proliferated under the guise of pirated software. Afterwards, the first component - a dropper - is introduced, which is responsible for the execution of another loader.
After verifying that it is not running on a virtual machine, this loader creates a virtual desktop and initiates the process of removing anti-virus software from the infected device. NetDooka is capable of uninstalling 360 Total Security, Avira, ESET, GData, and Viper security programs. This process is enabled by creating a remote mouse/pointer, which is then used to complete the uninstallation. Once this is done, various security software websites are blocked so that victims would be unable to obtain such programs.
Another dropper is used to execute the RAT. In some versions, before the final payload is dropped - a driver is installed, which is intended to prevent file deletion and process termination of the malware.
The NetDooka RAT has many functionalities. It can execute shell commands, which can perform a wide variety of malicious actions.
Notable capabilities include: keylogging (recording keystrokes), remote microphone and camera (recording audio and video), deploying DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks, and downloading/executing files. The last functionality can be used to infect the system with additional malware (e.g., trojans, ransomware, cryptocurrency miners, etc.).
As mentioned in the introduction, NetDooka infection processes and components may vary. Regardless, this malware is especially dangerous.

Windows 8 users: Start Windows 8 is Safe Mode with Networking - Go to Windows 8 Start Screen, type Advanced, in the search results select Settings. Click Advanced startup options, in the opened "General PC Settings" window, select Advanced startup.
Click the "Restart now" button. Your computer will now restart into the "Advanced Startup options menu". Click the "Troubleshoot" button, and then click the "Advanced options" button. In the advanced option screen, click "Startup settings".
Click the "Restart" button. Your PC will restart into the Startup Settings screen. Press F5 to boot in Safe Mode with Networking.

Windows 10 users: Click the Windows logo and select the Power icon. In the opened menu click "Restart" while holding "Shift" button on your keyboard. In the "choose an option" window click on the "Troubleshoot", next select "Advanced options".
In the advanced options menu select "Startup Settings" and click on the "Restart" button. In the following window you should click the "F5" button on your keyboard. This will restart your operating system in safe mode with networking.

Extract the downloaded archive and run the Autoruns.exe file.
In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.
Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.
You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files. After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".
After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer. Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.
Reboot your computer in normal mode. Following these steps should remove any malware from your computer. Note that manual threat removal requires advanced computer skills. If you do not have these skills, leave malware removal to antivirus and anti-malware programs.
