Removal instructions for BinaryEngine adware and the adverts it displays
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is BinaryEngine?
We discovered the BinaryEngine application while inspecting new submissions to VirusTotal. After analyzing this app, we determined that it operates as advertising-supported software (adware). This piece of software also belongs to the AdLoad malware family.
BinaryEngine adware overview
Once installed onto our test machine, BinaryEngine began running intrusive advertisement campaigns (i.e., displaying adverts). It is noteworthy that adware may require certain conditions to operate as designed. For example, if the browser/system or geolocation are incompatible, users do not visit specific websites, etc. - this software may not deliver advertisements. However, regardless of whether adware displays ads or not - it still endangers device and user safety.
Adware-delivered adverts typically endorse untrustworthy/harmful sites and software, online scams, and even malware. Some intrusive ads can even be triggered (by being clicked) to stealthily download/install software.
Any legitimate products encountered through these advertisements are unlikely to be promoted by their actual developers. Instead, scammers who abuse affiliate programs commonly employ this marketing method to obtain illegitimate commissions.
Furthermore, BinaryEngine might have browser hijacker traits since they are common for AdLoad adware, although we did not observe any during analysis.
What is more, this app may have data tracking abilities. Adware can target browsing data, personally identifiable details, usernames/passwords, credit card numbers, etc. The gathered data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
To summarize, the presence of software like BinaryEngine on devices - can result in system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
KernelReproduce, SmartTask, and CommonAnalyser are just a few examples of the adware we have analyzed. This software usually looks legitimate and offers "handy" features. However, the promised functionalities are rarely operational.
How did BinaryEngine install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled (packing together) with regular programs. Download from dubious channels (unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (ignored terms, used "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) - increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements proliferate advertising-supported software as well. Upon being clicked, the adverts can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user consent.
Adware may also have "official" promotional/download pages. Most users enter such websites through mistyped URLs or redirects caused by intrusive ads, spam browser notifications, sites that use rogue advertising networks, or installed adware (capable of force-opening browsers).
How to avoid installation of adware?
We highly recommend researching software and always downloading from official/verified channels. Installation processes must be approached with care, e.g., reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting-out of all additions.
We advise being vigilant when browsing - since fraudulent and malicious content typically looks legitimate. For example, intrusive adverts appear harmless, yet they redirect to unreliable/questionable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you experience such ads/redirects, inspect your device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with BinaryEngine, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
