How to uninstall unwanted apps that promote check-this.news and similar pages
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is check-this[.]news?
check-this[.]news is similar to chat-message[.]live, tlouslyrevor[.]top, yskimmed[.]top and many other rogue web pages. Typically, these sites are promoted via other dubious websites, deceptive advertisements, and potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). I.e., users do not often open/visit these web pages intentionally.
Once websites such as check-this[.]news are visited, they open about 2-3 other bogus pages or load dubious content. What happens next depends on the geolocations of their visitors.
Most of these sites attempt to deceive visitors into giving permission to show notifications by using a 'clickbait' technique - check-this[.]news suggests that, to continue loading it, visitors must allow the page to show notifications (click the "Allow" button). Generally, notifications from websites such as this contain various deceptive ads, links to other rogue pages, etc.
Websites such as check-this[.]news are often promoted via PUAs.
These apps can be designed to collect data. For example, IP addresses, entered search queries, geolocations, addresses of visited websites, and other browsing-related details, and even personal, sensitive data. The information is monetized by selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or in other ways. In such cases, users of PUAs might encounter problems relating to privacy, browsing safety, and they might even become victims of identity theft.
PUAs can also generate ads (e.g., coupons, pop-ups, surveys, and banners). If clicked, these can open potentially malicious pages or download and install unwanted apps by running certain scripts.
Name | Ads by check-this.news |
Threat Type | Push notifications ads, Unwanted ads, Pop-up ads |
Serving IP Address | 213.227.149.216 |
Symptoms | Seeing advertisements not originating from the sites you are browsing. Intrusive pop-up ads. Decreased Internet browsing speed. |
Distribution Methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, potentially unwanted applications (adware) |
Damage | Decreased computer performance, browser tracking - privacy issues, possible additional malware infections. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
PUAs do not improve the browsing experience or include any useful features, even when they are advertised as useful, legitimate applications. They are classified as potentially unwanted because users often download and install them unintentionally.
How did adware install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed via download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and settings, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Some PUAs have "official" download sites. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
You are advised not to use Peer-to-Peer networks (such as eMule, torrent clients, etc.), unofficial websites, third party downloaders, installers, etc. to download or install software or files. Use official pages and direct links.
Check download/installation set-ups for settings such as "Advanced", "Manual, or "Custom" (or include certain checkboxes) and decline offers to download or install unwanted apps before completing the process.
Additionally, do not trust or click advertisements that are displayed on dubious web pages - they can open other rogue sites or cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any suspicious or unknown extensions, add-ons and plug-ins installed on the browser. The same applies to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system.
If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
