Uninstall apps designed to promote onemessages.com and similar websites
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is onemessages[.]com?
onemessages[.]com is one of many rogue web pages that display dubious content or promote and open other untrusted websites. Other examples are securegate[.]xyz, press-allow-browser2[.]com, and tiktok-fun[.]com. Browsers usually open websites of this type when potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) are installed on them.
I.e., users do not visit these web pages intentionally. Note that PUAs can be designed to gather browsing-related data and serve advertisements.
Installed PUAs open addresses such as onemessages[.]com in new windows or tabs. When visited, the sites load dubious content or open about two or three other, potentially malicious pages. The way these sites operate depends on visitors' geolocations.
Like most pages of this type, onemessages[.]com uses a 'clickbait' technique to trick visitors into allowing it to show notifications. It suggests that users need to click the "Allow" button to watch/load a video. Typically, onemessages[.]com and similar sites display notifications with deceptive advertisements, links untrusted pages, etc. within them.
Neither onemessages[.]com nor other similar website should be allowed to show notifications. As mentioned, PUAs can feed users with ads: various coupons, surveys, banners, pop-ups and others. These can open untrusted web pages or even run scripts that cause download/installation of unwanted, potentially malicious software.
PUAs can also monitor and record information. In most cases, they collect browsing data such as IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited pages, and entered search queries, however, some PUAs record sensitive details. The developers sell the information to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways.
Having these apps installed on the browser and/or computer could be the reason behind issues relating to online privacy and browsing safety, and even identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised never to download or install any PUAs.

In summary, most PUAs open sites such as onemessages[.]com (and other dubious pages), serve advertisements, and collect user-system information. I.e., their main purpose is to generate revenue for the developers. They are classified as PUAs, since users often download and install them inadvertently.
How did adware install on my computer?
Commonly, users download and install PUAs together with other programs, when they are included into the set-ups as 'additional offers'. This distribution method of potentially unwanted apps is called "bundling".
It works when users download and install their programs without checking "Advanced", "Custom" or other settings, and fail to decline offers to download and install PUAs. In other cases, users cause unwanted downloads and installations by clicking deceptive advertisements that execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings, and decline offers to download or install additional, unwanted applications. Download software and files from official, trustworthy websites and via direct download links.
Other sources/channels such as third party downloaders and installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), unofficial pages, etc., are used to distribute unwanted, potentially malicious apps. Do not click ads displayed on dubious websites, since this can cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any suspicious extensions, add-ons and plug-ins installed on the browser, and programs of this kind installed on the computer. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
