How to remove redirects to and from betanews.me
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is betanews[.]me?
betanews[.]me is a rogue website sharing many common traits with sms-mail-message.com, fastnewstream.com, lifeimpressions.net and thousands of others. It operates by generating redirects to untrustworthy and malicious sites.
The site also presents visitors with dubious and harmful content. People rarely enter these web pages intentionally - typically they are redirected by intrusive ads or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already present on the system. These apps do not need express user permission to be installed onto devices.
Following successful installation, however, they cause redirects, run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers and monitor users' browsing habits.
betanews[.]me starts by checking visitors' IP addresses to learn their geolocations, which dictates the site's further course of action. Depending on their geolocations, users are redirected elsewhere and/or are presented with dubious material.
Furthermore, betanews[.]me uses browser notifications, the consent option to which is hidden within 'clickbait' ("I am not a robot / Click on Allow to confirm that you are not a robot"). If notifications are enabled, the web page then begins running intrusive advertisement campaigns.
The resultant ads significantly diminish the browsing experience by limiting browsing speed and website visibility (by overlaying content). These ads are a nuisance and a threat to device health and user safety. When intrusive advertisements are clicked, they often redirect to sale-based, untrustworthy/rogue, compromised, deceptive/scam and malicious web pages.
Clicking can even trigger them to execute scripts designed to stealthily download/install PUAs. Unwanted applications also generate redirects and can deliver the previously described ads. Some PUAs can make unauthorized changes to browsers, limit/deny access to their settings and promote fake search engines - essentially, this type hijacks browsers.
PUAs commonly have data tracking capabilities, which they use to record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and to collect personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This breach of privacy is then furthered when the gathered data is shared with third parties seeking to misuse it for profit.
In summary, PUAs can cause all manner of browser and system infiltration/infections, and can also lead to financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identify theft. Therefore, to ensure device and user safety, you are advised to remove all suspicious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Symptoms | Seeing advertisements not originating from the sites you are browsing. Intrusive pop-up ads. Decreased internet browsing speed. |
Distribution Methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, potentially unwanted applications (adware). |
Damage | Decreased computer performance, browser tracking - privacy issues, possible additional malware infections. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
PUAs often seem legitimate and tempt users to install with a wide variety of "useful" features, however, in most cases, the advertised functions are nonoperational.
Therefore, PUAs are useless and potentially harmful. The only purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs force-open untrustworthy/malicious sites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns, hijack browsers and track private data.
How did adware install on my computer?
PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing method of pre-packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious software is called "bundling". By rushing download/installation processes (e.g. skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options, etc.), users risk allowing bundled content onto their devices.
Some PUAs have "official" download web pages on which they are usually endorsed as "useful" and "free" programs. When clicked, intrusive ads can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all content, before downloading/installing. Use only trustworthy and verified download sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders are untrusted and should be avoided.
Approach download and installation processes with caution. Read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features and so on. Intrusive ads may seem normal and harmless, however, they can cause redirects to dubious web pages such as gambling, pornography, adult-dating and others.
If you encounter advertisements/redirects of this kind, inspect the device and eliminate all suspect applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
