Stop redirects to and from system-sms.com

Also Known As: system-sms.com pop-up
Damage level: Medium

What is system-sms[.]com?

Similar to vikolidoskopinsk.infotencecatche.infomuchinspardorop.info, and thousands of others, system-sms[.]com is a rogue website. It presents users with dubious content and causes redirects to other untrustworthy and malicious web pages.

Most visitors to system-sms[.]com enter it unintentionally - they are redirected by intrusive ads or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already present on the system. Note that these apps do not need express user permission to infiltrate devices. Once successfully installed, they generate redirects, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns, and track data.

system-sms[.]com pop-up redirects

system-sms[.]com first checks visitors' IP addresses to learn their geolocations. This information is necessary to determine its further course of action. Depending on the geolocations, it redirects users to a different web page and/or presents them with dubious content.

This website also employs browser notifications. It hides the consent option to these within clickbait ("If you are 18+, click allow to play video."). Consent to system-sms[.]com notifications allows it to run intrusive ad campaigns. The resultant ads are more than just a nuisance, they are also a safety threat.

When clicked, they redirect to untrustworthy, deceptive/scam and even malicious sites. Some can execute scripts designed to download/install PUAs without users' permission. As mentioned, unwanted applications cause redirects to similarly harmful websites and can run intrusive ad campaigns.

By employing various tools, they enable third party graphical content to be displayed on any site, thereby delivering ads (pop-ups, banners, surveys, coupons, etc.) that severely diminish the browsing experience by limiting browsing speed and page visibility.

PUAs often have data tracking capabilities, which they use to monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, web pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This vulnerable data is then shared with third parties (often, cyber criminals) seeking to misuse it for financial gain.

In summary, PUAs can cause browser/system infiltration and infections and lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Most PUAs share certain similarities, and some are even identical. They may seem legitimate and often trick users into installing them with offers of "useful" features. In fact, these features are rarely operational. The only purpose of all unwanted content is to generate profit for the developers.

Regular users receive no value. PUAs cause redirects, deliver intrusive ad campaigns, and gather private data.

How did adware install on my computer?

Some PUAs have "official" download websites, on which they are typically endorsed as "free" and "useful" software. They can also be installed together with other programs. "Bundling" is the term used to describe the deceptive marketing method of packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious content.

By rushing through the download/installation processes (skimming or ignoring terms, using pre-set options, skipping steps and sections, etc.), many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content onto their devices. Intrusive ads also proliferate PUAs. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install unwanted applications.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Research all content to verify its legitimacy, before downloading/installing. Use only official and verified download sources. Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.), free file-hosting sites, third party downloaders and similar channels are untrusted and should be avoided.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and decline to download/install additional apps, tools, functions, etc. Intrusive advertisements often seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to various dubious web pages (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling and others).

If you experience ads/redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately remove all dubious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
