Eliminate redirects to informationvine.com
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is informationvine.com?
informationvine.com is a search engine developed by the company that developed the legitimate Ask search engine (search.ask.com). It displays results identical to the Google search engine, however, they contain various non-secure advertisements.
Note that informationvine.com is promoted by rogue apps (browser extensions), which are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
One of the rogue browser extensions that promoted informationvine.com was YouTube Queue (now removed from Chrome Web Store). To achieve this, Youtube Queue misused webRequestBlocking API to redirect users' queries from a legitimate search engine to informationvine.com. There are other extensions that still promote this search engine by changing browser settings.
In this case, after installation, the rogue app reassigns the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL address. Therefore, these apps hijack browsers and force users to visit the informationvine.com website/search engine when they open browsers, enter search queries into the URL bar, or open new tabs.
Additionally, extensions that promote informationvine.com force users to visit the site even when they search directly from a specific search engine, for example, Yahoo (search.yahoo.com). Before opening informationvine.com, the browser opens search.croowila.com, which immediately redirects to informationvine.com.
PUAs that modify browser settings often prevent users from undoing the changes. Furthermore, they often gather browsing-related information such as IP addresses, geolocations, URLs of visited websites, entered search queries, and so on. Developers send this data to other people who misuse it to generate revenue.
If there are unwanted apps installed on your browser or operating system, remove them immediately.

As mentioned, informationvine.com is developed by a legitimate company, however, it is promoted by rogue apps. Some examples of other apps that behave in a similar manner include Fast Login Email Now, Quick Email Login, and Watch Your TV Shows Now.
In this particular case, developers generate revenue by including advertisements into the search results provided by informationvine.com. It is unknown whether these ads are legitimate and might be designed to open dubious/malicious websites.
How did informationvine.com install on my computer?
Unwanted apps usually infiltrate browsers or systems through intrusive advertisements or download/installation set-ups of other software. Developers include (bundle) unwanted apps into software set-ups and hide related information in "Custom", "Advanced", or other settings of this kind.
This increases the chance that PUAs will go unnoticed, thus allowing them to be downloaded/installed with other software. In other cases, PUAs are installed through intrusive, dubious ads, some of which execute scripts that download or install unwanted apps. Note that these ads cannot perform any functions unless they are clicked.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Download and install software properly, especially if it is free. Do not use third party installers and check all the available options (such as "Custom", "Advanced"). Opt-out of additionally-included apps and only then complete the setup. Do not download programs from unofficial pages, using third party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks and other such tools.
Do not trust intrusive ads, especially if they are displayed on dubious websites. If clicked, they often cause redirects to other dubious web pages or even cause unwanted downloads/installations. If a browser causes unwanted redirects, or ads appear whilst browsing the web, check for unwanted apps installed on your default browser.
All suspicious extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins must be removed immediately. The same applies to any unwanted programs installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate it.
