ConvertoPDF Browser Hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is blpsearch.com?
According to the developers, the ConvertoPDF app allows users to quickly convert PDF files directly from their browsers. This may seem to be a useful feature, however, ConvertoPDF is a potentially unwanted application (PUA), a browser hijacker. Generally, people download and install apps of this type inadvertently without their knowledge.
This PUA modifies browser settings (promoting the blpsearch.com search engine) and gathers information relating to users' browsing activity.
Most browser hijackers target browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Immediately after installation, ConvertoPDF assigns blpsearch.com as the search engine, default homepage, and new tab URL. Therefore, users are forced to visit this website when a browser or new tab is opened, or a search query is entered into the URL bar.
The only way to undo these changes is to uninstall the ConvertoPDF application. Note that blpsearch.com is a fake search engine that provides no real value and results simply generated by another search engine (Yahoo).
Therefore, if a search query is entered, blpsearch.com redirects users to search.yahoo.com, thus rendering blpsearch.com useless, since is provides no unique results. Furthermore, ConvertoPDF and blpsearch.com continually collect user-system information. For example, IP addresses, URLs of visited websites, entered search queries, geolocations, etc.
Some of the recorded data might contain personal details. Developers of browser hijackers and fake search engines share the data with third parties who misuse it to generate revenue.
Be aware that these other parties be cyber criminals. In summary, having a potentially unwanted app of this type installed might lead to problems with online privacy, browsing safety, or even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstall all PUAs immediately.

How did ConvertoPDF install on my computer?
Typically, PUAs are installed when software developers proliferate them using the "bundling" method. "Bundling" is stealth installation of PUAs together with regular software. Software developers avoid disclosing information about the bundling/inclusion of PUAs with software download or installation set-ups.
They hide PUAs in "Advanced", "Custom" and other similar settings of these set-ups. Furthermore, many users skip download/installation steps without checking the available settings - this is how most unwanted installations or downloads happen.
It can also happen when people click advertisements that cannot be trusted (these dubious ads are often displayed on malicious web pages). When clicked, they execute scripts that download and install unwanted apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Use official and trustworthy sources to download software. Avoid using third party software downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer, and other channels of this kind. Do not rush download or installation, check all available "Custom", "Advanced", and other settings/options, dismiss download/installation of unwanted software, and only the finish the process.
Intrusive ads may seem legitimate, however, they often redirect to untrustworthy websites such as gambling, pornography, adult dating, and other dubious pages. If you encounter unwanted redirects or unwanted ads regularly, check the browser for unwanted, unknown extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins, and remove them.
Also check the list of installed programs on the computer. If your computer is already infected with ConvertoPDF, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
