Search.hogwarin.com Redirect (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is search.hogwarin.com?
search.hogwarin.com is one of many fake search engines that supposedly provide more accurate results and an improved overall browsing experience.
Judging on appearance, this may seem to be a legitimate search engine, similar to Google, Yahoo, and other well-known sites, however, search.hogwarin.com is promoted through rogue download/installation set-ups that modify affected browser settings and record/track information relating to browsing habits.
Set-ups (used to promote search.hogwarin.com) often affect popular browsers such as Safari, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. They assign the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage browser settings to search.hogwarin.com. Therefore, users are forced to visit search.hogwarin.com when they open browsers or new tabs.
Additionally, these rogue download/installation set-ups install "helper objects" - apps that prevent users from undoing the modifications. "Helper objects" reassign search.hogwarin.com as the default homepage, search engine, etc. when attempts are made to revert the settings.
Having a browser affected in this way can be frustrating and will significantly diminish the browsing experience. Furthermore, search.hogwarin.com and "helper objects" are programmed to gather data relating to users' browsing activities.
They collect IP addresses, search results, URLs of visited websites, geo-locations, and other similar data that is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. Therefore, avoid using the search.hogwarin.com fake search engine and check your browsers for any unwanted apps.

There are many fake search engines online. Some examples are search-me.club, mysearchency.com, and search.porterice.com.
Most are promoted as legitimate and providing an enhanced browsing experience, useful features, tools, etc. In fact, most fake search engines are designed only to generate revenue for the developers and provide none of the functionality promised. Furthermore, they often cause unwanted redirects, deliver misleading results, and display intrusive ads.
How did search.hogwarin.com install on my computer?
As search.hogwarin.com is promoted using rogue download/installation set-ups, users often allow them to make changes inadvertently. Developers achieve this using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
Bundling often tricks users into allowing browser changes by hiding information regarding the modifications in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar parts of the download/installation processes. Nevertheless, these permissions cannot be successfully granted unless users skip download/installation steps or leave settings/options unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent unwanted downloads/installations on computers/browsers, download software using official and trustworthy sources, and not third party downloaders/installers such as peer-to-peer networks (torrents, eMule etc) and other dubious channels. Furthermore, check "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings/options of each download or installation.
Deselect unwanted applications (and additional offers) and only then finish the download/installation. Remember that online ads may seem legitimate, but many redirect to untrustworthy websites such as gambling, adult dating, pornography, and so on. If these ads occur frequently, there might be unwanted applications installed on your browser or programs on your computer.
Check the list of installed browser extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins, and remove unwanted/unknown entries immediately. Also check for unwanted programs installed on your operating system. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
