PC Cleaner Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is PC Cleaner?
Developers present PC Cleaner as a great system optimization tool. Judging on appearance alone, this app may seem legitimate, however, developers proliferate it using the "bundling" method and it thus often infiltrates systems without permission. Therefore, PC Cleaner is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA).
As mentioned, PC Cleaner allows users to optimize their systems by scanning and removing all junk files, fixing registry files, and so on. Note that the 'free version' of PC Cleaner is not capable of fixing anything and, thus, users are encouraged to purchase the 'full version'. It is currently not confirmed whether PC Cleaner can be trusted.
Be aware that many "bundled" system optimization tools are fake. They feed users with false scan results just to trick them into purchasing activation keys. Therefore, PC Cleaner might be a rogue app and you should consider uninstalling it. Furthermore, "bundling" is often used to proliferate several unwanted applications at once.
Therefore, PC Cleaner might not be the only app that has stealthily infiltrated your system. In most cases, "bundling" is used to spread adware and browser hijackers.
These apps gather sensitive information, deliver intrusive advertisements, and cause unwanted redirects, thereby posing a direct threat to your privacy and browsing safety. Therefore, as well as uninstalling PC Cleaner, you should eliminate other dubious applications/browser add-ons.
Name | PC Cleaner potentially unwanted application |
Threat Type | PUP (potentially unwanted program), PUA (potentially unwanted application) |
Symptoms | A program that you don't recall installing suddenly appeared on your computer. New application is performing computer scans and displays warning messages about found issues. Asks for payment in order to eliminate the supposedly found errors. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers. |
Damage | Monetary loss (unnecessary purchase of fake software), unwanted warning pop-ups, slow computer performance. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
There are hundreds of potentially unwanted applications, all of which are very similar. By offering "useful features", these applications attempt to give the impression of legitimacy and trick gullible users to install, however, few PUAs provide the functions promised. Most are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Rather than giving any real value for regular users, they deliver advertisements, cause redirects, and gather sensitive information.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
This application has an official download/installation website, however, it is also distributed using the "bundling" method - stealth installation of third party applications with regular (usually free) software. Developers do not want users to know that additional applications are being installed.
Therefore, they conceal "bundled" apps within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes. Many users are likely to rush these procedures and skip steps - behavior that often leads to inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted applications. In this way, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
As well as using the "bundling" method, developers proliferate unwanted apps via intrusive advertisements that redirect to malicious websites and run scripts that download and install PUAs. Therefore, to prevent this situation, be very cautious during the download/installation processes, and when browsing the Internet.
Carefully analyze all steps of the download/installation procedures. Cecline offers to download/install third party applications and opt-out of those already included. We recommend that you download software from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, and thus these tools should never be used.
Intrusive advertisements usually seem legitimate, since developers invest many resources into their design, however, they are likely to lead to dubious sites, such as gambling, adult dating, pornography, and so on. If you experience these redirects, check the list of installed programs/browser plug-ins and remove any suspicious entries.
The key to computer safety is caution. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
