Internet Booster Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Internet Booster?
Developers present Internet Booster as a legitimate application that optimizes Internet connections and increases download performance. Initially, Internet Booster may seem legitimate, however, developers proliferate this app using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
Therefore, in some cases, Internet Booster infiltrates systems without permission and is thus categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA).
Internet Booster supposedly provides several Internet connection-enhancing features, however, to use them, users must first pay for Internet Booster's activation (also known as the 'full version'). It is currently unknown whether Internet Booster can be trusted. Firstly, no software is capable of breaking the performance limit that your Internet service provider sets.
Therefore, if you have already reached the performance stated in your Internet service contract, no software will help you to go faster. The only possible scenarios are computer lacking drivers, system being infected with a connection-greedy virus (or unwanted software), or hardware (e.g., wires, router, or similar) not working properly.
In this case, you should scan the system with a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware suite, update your system drivers (download them directly from the manufacturer's website), and ensure that all hardware is working properly. Secondly, "bundled" applications are often useless.
"Bundling" applications (e.g., fake anti-virus suites, system optimization tools, and so on) is a way to offer "useful functionality" that can only be used once the app is activated. In fact, these programs deliver no real value for regular users - all claims are merely attempts to extort money from unsuspecting users.
Internet Booster might be one of these unwanted applications. Therefore, we advise you to uninstall this app and certainly so not pay for the full version. "Bundling" is commonly used to proliferate several potentially unwanted applications at once. In most cases, "bundled" apps are categorized as adware and browser hijackers.
They deliver intrusive advertisements, cause unwanted redirects, and record various sensitive information. Therefore, uninstall Internet Booster and also eliminate other dubious applications/browser extensions.
Name | Internet Booster potentially unwanted application |
Threat Type | PUP (potentially unwanted program), PUA (potentially unwanted application) |
Symptoms | A program that you don't recall installing suddenly appeared on your computer. New application is performing computer scans and displays warning messages about found issues. Asks for payment in order to eliminate the supposedly found errors. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers. |
Damage | Monetary loss (unnecessary purchase of fake software), unwanted warning pop-ups, slow computer performance. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
There are dozens of potentially unwanted applications, all of which are very similar. These applications are likely to offer 'useful functionality' to give the impression of legitimacy, however, the only purpose of all PUAs is to generate revenue for the developers.
Few of these apps provide the functionality promised and most are useless. Rather than enabling useful functions, potentially unwanted applications pose a direct threat to your privacy and web browsing safety.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
Internet Booster is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, it is also proliferated using the "bundling" method. Therefore, it often infiltrates systems without permission. Developers do not disclose PUA installations properly.
Therefore, all information regarding modification of browser settings is hidden within "Custom/Advanced" options (or other sections) of the download/installation processes.
Furthermore, many users rush download/installation processes and skip steps. This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted applications - users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be very cautious during the download/installation processes. Select "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs. Opt-out of additionally-included applications and decline offers to download/install them.
We recommend that you download software from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, and thus these tools should never be used. Potentially unwanted applications are often distributed using intrusive ads that redirect to malicious sites and execute scripts that download/install malware.
Most seem legitimate, since developers invest time and resources into ad design, but they often redirect to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, and so on). Most are delivered by adware-type PUAs. If you experience dubious redirects, remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
