What is search.altagit.com?
Identical to search.eliaho.com, search.olivernetko.com, search.schooldozer.com, and many others, search.altagit.com is a fake search engine that falsely claims to enhance the browsing experience by generating improved results.
Judging on appearance alone, search.altagit.com may seem legitimate, since it appears similar to Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other legitimate search engines. In fact, developers promote this site via browser-hijacking download/installation set-ups. In addition, it continually records information relating to users' Internet browsing activity.
Rogue set-ups modify web browser settings without permission. They target Safari, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.
Immediately after infiltration, set-ups assign the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to search.altagit.com and then stealthily install a number of "helper objects" (third party applications and browser plug-ins) to prevent users from reverting the aforementioned changes - set-ups reassign browser settings when attempts are made to change them.
Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible and users are encouraged to visit search.altagit.com when they open a new browser tab or search via the URL bar. These redirects significantly diminish the browsing experience. Furthermore, search.altagit.com and "helper objects" continually gather data relating to web browsing habits.
Collected data (Internet Protocol [IP] addresses, web URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, keystrokes and similar) often contains personal details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These people attempt to misuse private information to generate revenue.
Therefore, data tracking can lead to serious privacy issues. If you encounter redirects to search.altagit.com, immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. Never return to this website.

The Internet is full of fake web search engines, all of which are virtually identical. By offering "useful features" (improved results, shortcuts to popular sites, weather forecasts, and similar), fake search engines attempt to give the impression of legitimacy.
In fact, they deliver no real value for regular users, since the only purpose of all fake search engines is to generate revenue for the developers.
These sites typically cause unwanted redirects and gather sensitive data. In some cases, they feed users with false search results and intrusive ads (coupons, banners, etc.) that redirect to potentially malicious websites. Therefore, using any fake search engine might lead to high-risk computer infections.
How did search.altagit.com install on my computer?
As mentioned above, search.altagit.com is promoted using rogue downloaders/installers. These marketing method is called "bundling". Developers hide all details of browser modifications within "Custom/Advanced" options (or other sections) of the download/installation processes. They do not adequately disclose this information.
Furthermore, many users rush these procedures and skip steps. In doing so, they inadvertently grant set-ups permission to modify various settings. In this way, they expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) are also distributed using the "bundling" method and intrusive advertisements. Therefore, to prevent infiltration, be very cautious when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software.
Developers invest many resources into intrusive ad design, thereby making them appear legitimate, however, these ads redirect to dubious sites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, and so on) and are typically delivered by adware-type programs. If you encounter dubious redirects, immediately eliminate all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
In addition, closely observe each step of the download/installation processes using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Opt-out of all additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install them.
In addition, avoid using third party downloaders/installers, since they often include PUPs. Software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links.
