Nilla Weather Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Nilla Weather?
Identical to Weather For Chrome, Check Weather, Search My Tabs, and many others, Nilla Weather is a deceptive application that supposedly allows users to check weather forecasts directly from the web browser, without visiting any external websites. This functionality may appear legitimate and useful, however, Nilla Weather infiltrates systems without permission.
Furthermore, it continually gathers various sensitive information and feeds users with numerous 'malvertising' ads. For these reasons, Nilla Weather is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Immediately after infiltration, Nilla Weather delivers coupon, pop-up, banner, and other intrusive ads. To achieve this, Nilla Weather's developers employ various tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying website content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
In addition, these rogue ads typically lead to malicious websites and, in some cases, even run scripts designed to download/install malware or other PUPs. Therefore, even accidental clicks might result in high-risk computer infections. Essentially, Nilla Weather is used to generate fraudulent advertising revenue.
Be aware that this application gathers various information that often includes personal details. Collected data (IP addresses, keystrokes, website URLs visited, pages viewed, etc.) is later sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). Therefore, the presence of a data-tracking app might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Furthermore, although Nilla Weather is not confirmed to misuse system resources, there are many PUPs that do so.
These rogue programs mine cryptocurrency or run other unwanted processes in the background. In doing so, potentially unwanted programs significantly reduce entire system performance. For these reasons, potentially unwanted programs such as Nilla Weather should be uninstalled without delay.

There are hundreds of adware-type applications virtually identical to Nilla Weather. By offering various "useful features", apps such as Nilla Weather often trick users into believing that they are legitimate and useful, however, the only purpose of potentially unwanted programs is to generate revenue for the developers.
Only a small percentage provide the features promised - most deliver no real value for regular users. Rather than (or, in some cases, together with) enabling the functionality promised, PUPs gather information and deliver malicious ads, thereby posing a threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.
How did Nilla Weather install on my computer?
Although Nilla Weather is free for anyone to download on its official website, this application often infiltrates systems without permission. This is commonly due to users' lack of caution and careless behavior. Apps such as Nilla Weather are distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling", together with 'malvertising' ads.
"Bundling" is stealth installation of third party applications together with regular (mostly free) software.
Developers do not disclose this installation properly - "bundled" apps are hidden within the "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes. If you skip download/installation steps and click various advertisements, you will expose your system to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. To prevent system infiltration by adware, be very careful during the download/installation processes, and when browsing the Internet in general. Closely observe each step (especially the "Custom/Advanced" settings) of the download/installation processes, decline offers to download/install additional apps, and cancel those already included.
Furthermore, bear in mind that malicious ads appear genuine, since criminals invest a great deal of time and effort into their design, however, they redirect to various dubious sites (e.g., survey, gambling, adult dating, etc.) If you encounter redirects to such websites, immediately eliminate all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
