What is ERROR_LOCAL_USER_BX06DE4897_MD9858?
ERROR_LOCAL_USER_BX06DE4897_MD9858 is an updated version of Windows Activation Pro scam that locks the screen and states that the Windows OS is not activated.
To remove the screen lock, victims must enter a valid Windows activation key. Be aware, however, that this is a scam - legitimate keys will not solve the problem. To receive help in solving this problem, victims are encouraged to contact 'Customer Service' via a telephone number provided (1-844-459-8882).
On initial inspection, ERROR_LOCAL_USER_BX06DE4897_MD9858 may seem a legitimate error message, however, claims regarding missing product keys are false. This error is a scam. Developers attempt to trick victims into contacting Customer Service and paying for services that are not needed.
Although ERROR_LOCAL_USER_BX06DE4897_MD9858 does not encrypt files, it has similar behavior to ransomware-type viruses, which, as well as file encryption, locks computer screens, and encourages victims to contact cyber criminals. Victims are then requested to pay a certain sum to regain use of their computers.
We strongly advise you to ignore all requests to pay or contact these people. Cyber criminals aim to generate as much revenue as possible and there is a high probability that paying will not deliver any positive result - you will simply be scammed. Furthermore, criminals might steal your credit card information, leading to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
There are many fake error messages that attempt to trick users into submitting payments. Examples include CIA Election AntiCheat Control - 2016, You Have A ZEUS Virus, and Cyber Security Warning.
These viruses are often distributed together with adware/browser-hijacking applications, however, they are also proliferated via spam emails (malicious attachments), peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, fake software updaters, and trojans. Therefore, be very cautious when downloading software from unofficial sources, such as freeware download websites.
In addition, never open files received from suspicious/unrecognized email addresses. Furthermore, keep your installed applications up-to-date, since cyber criminals are capable of exploiting software bugs to infiltrate systems. Using a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite is also paramount.
