BSOD Error Scam

What is BSOD Error?
"BSOD error" is a fake error message displayed by a rogue website. It states that the system has been infected with high-risk malware.
The message is distributed by various adware-type applications that cause unwanted browser redirects. These applications might also record various information relating to users' Internet browsing activity and display intrusive online advertisements.
"BSOD error" claims that the computer has been infected and malware attempts have been made to access Windows Registry files. It also warns users that closing the browser might result in the corruption of Registry files, and that restarting the computer could result in data loss or even operating system failure.
The message encourages users to call a toll-free telephone number (888-980-3095) to contact a "Microsoft-Certified technician" who will supposedly help to solve this problem. Be aware that this error message is false - criminals attempt to trick users into paying for help that is not required.
The only infection is the adware itself that causes redirects to a site displaying this false error message. Adware-type applications often display various advertisements that conceal underlying content of visited websites, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, some lead to malicious websites - even accidental clicks can result in high-risk adware or malware infections. In addition, adware collects information such as IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, geo-location, operating system/browser types, language settings, Internet service provider, and so on.
This recorded data might include private details that developers of adware misuse or share with third parties (who use it to generate revenue). Thus, data tracking might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Adware-type applications should be removed immediately from your system.
Research shows that adware-type applications often claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience by providing a number of 'valuable functions'. These claims are simply attempts to trick users to install. All adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
These applications are useless for regular users. Rather than enabling the functionality promised, potentially unwanted adware-type programs collect personally identifiable information, display intrusive online advertisements, and often cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did BSOD Error install on my computer?
Adware-type applications usually have an official download website, however, developers also distribute these apps using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software.
Many users do not express enough caution during the download/installation procedures and often inadvertently install rogue applications hidden by developers within the "Custom/Advanced" settings of the download/installation processes.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution - never rush the download or installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Furthermore, all additionally-included programs should be canceled. Bundled programs are often malicious and, thus, should never be installed.
