Swift2search.com Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is swift2search.com?
Swift2Search is a deceptive browser extension that claims to allow users to search various social networks. This application may seem legitimate, however, due to rogue behavior, Swift2Search is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker.
Be aware that this application is likely to infiltrate systems without users' permission. Furthermore, Swift2Search records various data types and causes unwanted browser redirects.
Following infiltration, Swift2Search hijacks Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, assigning the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine options to swift2search.com.
Initially, this behavior may not seem rogue, however, users are unable to revert these changes, since Swift2Search automatically reassigns settings when attempts are made to change them - they are then forced to continually visit swift2search.com without their consent.
This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience. In addition, Swift2Search gathers information relating to Internet browsing activity including IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc. This is shared with third parties (possibly, cyber criminals) who misuse private data to generate revenue (causing serious privacy issues). Therefore, the Swift2Search browser hijacker should be uninstalled immediately.
Be aware that the Internet is full of browser-hijacking applications similar to Swift2Search including PokeDex Search, Top News Reporter, and Serene Find (just some examples from a long list).
Browser hijackers promise a number of 'useful features' that will supposedly improve users' web browsing experience, however, these applications are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Swift2Search and other similar apps merely collect personally identifiable information (which is later sold to third parties), cause unwanted redirects (to generate traffic for various website), and deliver intrusive online advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model).
These programs are useless for regular users. Fake Internet search engines promoted via browser-hijacking apps often generate search results leading to malicious websites - using them can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
How did swift2search.com install on my computer?
Swift2Search is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install this program inadvertently. The reason for this is a deceptive marketing method called "bundling", which is used to distribute Swift2Search. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of third party applications with regular software/apps.
Developers know that users commonly skip most/all of the download and installation steps. Therefore, bundled software is usually hidden within "Custom/Advanced" settings. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of potentially unwanted programs can be prevented by closely analyzing the download and installation processes and opting-out of all additionally-included apps. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings, carefully observe each step, and decline all offers to download/install third party programs. Furthermore, never allow set-ups to modify settings that are irrelevant to the installation.
