Product Promoter Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Product Promoter?
Product Promoter is a rogue browser extension that claims to enable various features such as coupons and comparison shopping - supposedly to enhance users' Internet browsing experience. This extension may seem to provide legitimate and useful functionality, however, Product Promoter is categorized as adware.
The developers of this dubious application (SuperWeb LLC) employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install Product Promoter on Internet browsers without users' permission.
After successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Product Promoter generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
These intrusive online advertisements include (but are not limited to) banner, full-page, pop-up, search, transitional, and interstitial ads. These advertisements often lead to further high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, Product Promoter collects various software and hardware information such as search queries entered into search engines (Bing, Google, Yahoo, etc.), URLs visited, pages viewed, unique identifier numbers, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), and other data that may be personally identifiable.
Be aware that this behavior can result in serious privacy issues or identity theft. Product Promoter is just one of hundreds of identical potentially unwanted applications developed by SuperWeb LLC. None of these (including Product Promoter) provide any significant value for the user.
These identical browser extensions are released under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements and sharing collected information with third parties.
For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall Product Promoter from your Internet browsers.
Product Promoter is mostly distributed via small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com, and many others.
Download clients are employed by these websites to monetize their free services and traffic by offering installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') applications or browser add-ons together with the chosen free software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. To avoid installation of Product Promoter, or other similar PUPs, follow each step when downloading free software to ensure that no other applications are being installed together with it.
Furthermore, when installing downloaded software, select the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If your system is infected with Product Promoter, and you observe intrusive online advertisements, follow the removal guide below to uninstall this adware from your system immediately.
